For many people here in the United States, the colorful skulls and decorations lining the aisles at stores in October signify a culture and a tradition they know little about. But for many individuals through out Latin America, especially Mexico, el Día de los Muertos is an important holiday meant to celebrate and remember loved ones who have died. El Día de los Muertos begins November 1 and lasts through November 2, and it is typically celebrated with public festivals and parades, music, dancing, visiting and decorating the graves of loved ones, making them an altar, and many more activities. Despite some common misconceptions, el Día de los Muertos is not a time of sadness nor grief, and it is very distinct from Halloween. While it is not recognized as a federal holiday in the United States, the celebration has increased in popularity in several cities and has increasingly been incorporated into the mainstream. For those who took the time to read that brief history, I encourage you to look into the celebration and history more! But back to the point, in just 3 short days, el Día de los Muertos will be celebrated by several hundred million people, families, and communities around the world in a variety of ways, and what better way for me than to bake! Rather than incorporating the holiday into my usual cookies and cakes, I wanted to try something different and thought chocolate-dipped Rice Krispie treats would be just the way to do that! Rice Krispie Treat Recipe
What You Need
Directions1. Allow your Rice Krispies to cool completely. I placed mine in the fridge for a while so they would harden a bit faster/better. Next, use the cookie cutters to cut out skull and pumpkin shapes.
2. Try placing the cookie cutters as close as possible to make the maximum number of cut outs (2 doz.)
3. Prepare to place sticks in the Rice Krispies.
4. Melt a little bit of white chocolate, dip the end of the stick into the chocolate, and then gently shove the stick into the middle of the Rice Krispie. 5. Once all of the sticks are placed into the Rice Krispies, you will begin melting chocolate to dip them in. 6. Because the chocolate was thick, I didn't not dip the entire thing, which caused the whole treat to fall apart and off of the stick. Rather, I spread the chocolate onto a small platter/plate and gently dipped the front of the Rice Krispy only. 7. Press the treat into the chocolate and remove it, and then set it aside on wax paper. If the treat does not get completely covered, gently add a little more chocolate to the top and smooth it with a frosting knife. 8. Allow the chocolate to harden, which should not take too long. 9. Place colored frosting into decorating bags using tip #3 for black and tip #2 for all of the other colors. 10. Start decorating the Rice Krispie treats, using any design of your choice. Below I included progression photos for both the skull and pumpkin using my design.
11. Finish decorating and then enjoy! You can also easily place them into small goodie bags to share with your friends and family! ¡Qué tenga un buen Día de los Muertos!
