Alright, so everyone knows what May means right? Food of course! Well…graduations to be more exact. While most of us think about all of the parties we will be going to and what food is going to be where, graduates are busy not only trying to navigate their future but now throw together some party for all of their friends and family (or where I’m from, basically the whole community). Now this can be really stressful on families and just like during any other major celebration, as the planning begins, tensions run high. So hopefully I can help a little bit with that! After providing desserts for my own graduation and several others, I feel like I have a bit of useful advice I could offer you soon-to-be graduates and family members. Ordering So, the first thing I want to talk about is when to order your sweets! Now it usually depends on who you get them from, so while some bakeries want to know months in advance, other places would probably be able to get you something the day of. In order to be safe, I would say it is better to plan ahead and try to ask someone at least a month ahead of time, so neither party feels rushed and you are able to get a product you want. Either way, it is good to start thinking about what desserts you will be having at your graduation sooner rather than later. Theme The next important factor to consider is what theme you are going to follow. For some people, this is not a problem as they just use a few generic graduation decorations and colors throughout the party, whereas others will go into full swing using logos and colors from their high school or future college or something like pastel colors, flowers, and mason jars. If you are someone who is going to try and utilize a certain color scheme or theme throughout the party, you should consider trying to incorporate that into your dessert table. While it is not critical, it is something that could help tie the whole party together whether it is by placing a few pieces of décor around the desserts, frosting them in a certain color, or using different shapes and images on some cookies or a cake. Location & Layout Somewhat tying in with the theme of the party and desserts, is the location and layout you will be using. It is important to place the desserts in a location that is easy to see, and relatively close to the main meal so people can either grab something as they go through the main food line or walk up and grab a little piece of dessert whenever they please. Another thing to consider is how you want to set up your desserts. Do you want to just set everything out in lines or arrange them into the shape of a logo or year? Or do you want to use other items such as cupcake tiers, jars, platters, or a center piece? No matter how you decide to do it, people are going to eat the dessert, but it is still something to think about while planning the party. Quantity & Type Finally, what some may consider the most important factors pertaining to desserts or food in general at a graduation party is the quantity and type. Orders for this celebration can range anywhere from 30 to 300 people, but what not many people realize is that in most cases, not everyone you invited is going to attend or eat the dessert. So, you should focus on two factors when it comes to quantity: how many guests will be attending and how hungry they will be. First, think about how many people you invited, and on average it is likely that only 2/3 of the guests will actually be attending the party. However, while some guests might not attend, some may bring extras, some may eat more than one piece of dessert, and some may eat none. Consequently, the best way to decide on quantity is to average one dessert per person, unless for some reason you know that you will not need that many. If you run out towards the end, it will not be the end of the world, just as if you end up having to take a couple dozen cupcakes or cookies home, they will not go to waste! Alright, the last thing I want to add it that most graduation parties are like an open house with people passing in and out frequently, so a type of dessert people can nibble on as they come through is important. That being said, while some people prefer to have a big cake acting as a centerpiece, desserts such as cookies or cupcakes that people can easily walk up and grab or take with them may be the more suitable option. Hope this blog can help lessen some of the stress of party planning for you! Happy graduating!
